3D Scanning & Reverse Engineering
3D scanning captures the shape of a real object as digital geometry. ATHERIS uses it to reproduce parts that are worn, broken or no longer available, and to design new parts that fit perfectly around existing ones.
Raw scan vs. manufacturing-ready CAD
A raw scan is a mesh: millions of tiny triangles describing a surface. It is excellent for reference, visual reproduction and checking fit, but it is hard to edit and is not ideal for precise manufacturing.
Reverse engineering uses that scan as a guide to rebuild the part as a clean CAD model, with true flat faces, round holes and editable dimensions. That model can be modified, improved and manufactured reliably. We will recommend which one your project needs, since a full CAD rebuild takes more time.
Common uses
- Reproducing discontinued or one-of-a-kind components
- Digitizing an existing part to keep a spare on file
- Scanning a vehicle area or assembly to design parts that fit it
- Capturing organic or sculpted shapes that are hard to measure
- Improving a part: thicker walls, extra mounting points, stronger material
Scanning plus fabrication
Because design and fabrication happen in the same studio, a scan rarely ends as just a file. A typical job goes from scan, to CAD reconstruction, to a printed test piece, to the finished part, with one person handling each step.
Accuracy
Scan quality depends on the object's size, surface and detail. Shiny, black or transparent surfaces may need preparation. We will discuss what level of detail is realistic for your part before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Can you scan something that is broken?
Often, yes. Missing sections can be reconstructed in CAD using the remaining geometry and measurements.
What file will I receive?
Typically a mesh (such as STL or OBJ) for raw scans, or a STEP file for reverse-engineered CAD. We confirm formats when quoting.
Do I need to bring the object in?
For most parts, yes. Local handoff in Milton or shipping to us from anywhere in Canada can be arranged.
